Baracoda RoadRunners deliver the goods for Speedex in Greece

Kostas Charatsaris, Speedex's IT Manager, explains us today why his company chose Baracoda and what are the main benefits of that solution for their delivery operations.

Can you briefly introduce Speedex Company and activity?
The Greek courier company SPEEDEX was founded in 1986 to provide guaranteed transportation of urgent shipments in Greece and throughout the world. Today, the company forms part of FOURLIS Holdings and SFAKIANAKIS Holding and provides high-quality courier and logistics services, certified by the international standard ISO 9001: 2000, through its network of 190 outlets in Greece.

How did your system work before using Baracoda scanners ?
Before sourcing Baracoda scanners, our scanning applications had been supplied by a number of different manufacturers. They were connected to the company's computer system through USB/RS232, which lacked flexibility because the wires did not exceed 2 meters. Another problem the company faced concerned the servicing of the applications and the fact that they were too sophisticated to manage in the company's own IT department. There was also an issue related to the programming of the scanners, due to their various makes and configuration.

Why did Speedex chose Baracoda ?
SPEEDEX chose the Baracoda RoadRunners Evolution 1D Bluetooth scanners because of their reputation for good quality Bluetooth, which is constantly connected to the mobile BlackBerry phone or PC. We were also impressed with the easy programmability of the scanners and with their configuration stability. It was also important to us that the scanners could be easy and comfortable to use.

What are the more significant benefits of this solution?
The Baracoda scanner is the best solution to be used by couriers. We decided to provide our couriers with RoadRunners in order to facilitate the receipt and distribution of shipments. As our couriers often operate in difficult weather conditions we needed a scanner that was highly weather tolerant as well as being resistant to falls, high temperatures and dust. Another advantage of the RoadRunners is that the long life of their batteries enables satff to operate the applications for long periods before needing to recharge them.

Printemps optimizes its logistics operations of order preparation and stock management in warehouse

Jean-Luc Chaumien, Technical and Security Manager at Printemps Logistique, explains how Baracoda RoadRunners barcode scanners have improved logistics operators' productivity in their French warehouse.

Can you briefly introduce your logistics site please ?
La Houssaye's site was created in 1993 and is dedicated to logistics operations on parcels and pallets for 2 main customers : Printemps and Made in Sport. About 160 up to 250 people work here according to activity periods. Our warehouse measures 40000 sqm and 2 teams (morning and afternoon) handle up to 13 millions pieces per year for Printemps and 1 million pieces for Made in Sport.

What kind of traceability system did you use before investing in Baracoda solutions, and how did it work ?
We were equiped with Psion Teklogix 7035 teminals with a specific warehouse software connected via wifi to our central database. However they were not adapted to our order preparation operations because of their weight and they were also cumbersome. We have had to make our material evolve to a lighter, ergonomic and compact solution.

What kind Baracoda solution did you choose and how does it work ?
Since september 2008 50 Baracoda RoadRunners have been used for stock management and order preparation. They are connected via Bluetooth to Psion Teklogix Work About Pro terminals fixed on the floats. We have not changed our logistics software and one scanner can be used by several operators. At the end of the day the Roadrunners are placed on cradles to be recharged during the night.

What are the benefits of such a solution ?
RoadRunners barcode scannerd are ergonomic, lightweight, small and easy to handle. Given that 80% of our logistics operators are women, who make the same actions all day long, it was very important for us to invest in a compact, comfortable and non cumbersome solution. Thanks to the RoadRunners lanyard the operator can wear it at his/her wrist without any weight sensation. The Work About Pro terminals enable us to get a better data reading quality on the screens. As we have not changed our software solution and thanks to the single button of the RoadRunners it was easy for us to adopt this new solution.

Do you plan to extend this solution to all your activities in the warehouse ?
We do not plan it today but we may extend our fleet of scanners in the future. We are still working with some of our Psion Teklogix 7035 previous scanners and we might have to replace them one day.
